What Travel Taught Me

What Travel Taught Me

By Diane Nettleton, Founder of GAIA Skincare

"I’ve recently returned from 12 nights away - 5 airlines, 4 countries, 7 spa treatments, 3 yoga classes, 6 gym visits, at least 10,000 steps a day, 2 GAIA meetings, and 2 spa partner visits. I made friends, met my nephew, read 2 books, and wrote in my journal. This is what I’ve learnt."

  1. Arrive at your destination in the morning - it helps you settle in and make the most of your first day. Explore more than just the tourist areas and walk as much as you can (good trainers are essential).
  2. Pack carefully and appropriately but wear what you enjoy. I use packing cubes so I don’t have to unpack everything. Travelling with just one suitcase really helps your mindset - simplicity is good for you.
  3. In transit, you can sometimes feel like you don’t belong, but you do - to a community of other travelers, all moving, exploring, and learning.
  4. Buy from local shops, support local restaurants, and embrace the heritage. In Hévíz, I visited the thermal lakes - a reminder of how special local traditions are. Apps like Spotted by Locals are great for finding real, local experiences.
  5. Have a sense of purpose. Mine is usually seeking out spas - places of calm, connection, and inspiration. Surround yourself with beauty: a view, a garden, a location that lifts your spirit.
  6. Travel gives us headspace for the future. It transforms us, challenges us, and takes us on both an emotional and physical journey. As a solo female traveller, I’m always aware - Am I safe? Where will I eat? Are my possessions secure? But that awareness brings confidence too.
  7. Prescribe yourself a hotel that feels right. For me, it has to have a spa, yoga, pool, gym, and healthy food. And always have familiar things around you - my GAIA products, a magazine, my journal, and a good book make anywhere feel like home.
  8. Finally, be responsible with your travel. Plan your routes and transfers thoughtfully. Although I took 5 flights, visiting 4 destinations together saved 3 extra flights. Small choices make a difference.

Travel reminds me to live simply, move intentionally, and stay connected - to beauty, to nature, and to myself.
